Jonathan Freegard Architects worked closely with the client to develop this former builder’s yard into a mixture of four 2 & 3 bedroom flats each with its own individual ground-level entrance. The upper flats have private roof terraces with magnificent views over Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, while the ground floor flats have their own sizeable private gardens bounded by the old cemetery wall.
Following a planning refusal before our involvement, we obtained planning permission for this new scheme withinin 10 weeks of being appointed, the planners having made it clear from our first discussions that our scheme was very likely to be approved. So work was able to start on site without further delay.
The design has been careful to preserve the existing open undercroft with the original first floor building above it, supported on cast iron columns. This gives immediate views from the shared entrance through to the cemetery that helps orientation as well as an awareness of the building’s history.
